LISLE -- There was no wild celebration or loud ruckus.
In fact, there were only about eight people who witnessed junior Maria Scheet as she broke the Benet school record for the pole vault at 11 feet shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the girls East Suburban Catholic Conference track meet at Benedictine University.
"It was pretty awesome," Scheet said. "I was just going out there and trying to have some fun. It was a lucky vault because I could feel my side hit the pole, but it stayed on and I'm happy about that one."
Scheet broke the old mark of 10-6 set by Erin Frazer in 2004.Overall, a number of Scheet's Benet teammates put forth their best efforts to date to help Benet score an impressive victory. The Redwings easily won the meet with 171 points to repeat as conference champions. Marian Catholic was second with 70.
"We were fabulous today," Benet coach Scott Brooks said. "There is no other way to put it. On paper, this was supposed to be a really close meet. So many of my kids did things I wasn't even sure they were capable of doing today. It was just fantastic."
Benet junior Molly Allen held off Fenwick's Margaret Connelly in one of the tightest races to claim the 1,600-meter run.
Allen and Connelly went to the same grade school, so it did not surprise Allen one bit when Connelly presented the stiffest challenge.
The two runners began to separate after two laps.
"She started her push way early," Allen said. "I don't think I've ever started a kick for the end of the race that early. When she started going I was like, 'oh my gosh.' It was really mentally tough because I had just come off of the 800."
But Allen managed to hold onto the lead.
"It was a gutsy race for her," Brooks said. "She wasn't sure if she could beat (Connelly), but when (Connelly) made two or three moves, (Allen) was able to hold (Connelly) off every time."
The Redwings' Kelsey Ontko also had a huge day. She participated in four events and won three - the 200 and 400 dashes and the long jump. Providence's Eileen Moran edged Ontko in the 100.
For Ontko, the 400 was the surprise.
"The 400 totally opened a new door for me today," she said. "I dropped a second and a half. A couple of days ago I knew I was going to run the 400, but I never expected to do this well."
Benet's McKinzie Schulz was a multiple-event winner, taking the 800 run and 300 hurdles. Benet's Liz Yahiro won the triple jump.
