Marian Catholic's Erickson makes history in Charleston

CHARLESTON- Marian Catholic junior Mitchell Erickson made plenty of history on Saturday at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

Erickson cleared 16 feet, 9 inches to win the Class AA pole vault championship. A week ago, Marian's Melissa Gergel won the Class AA girls pole vault crown. It is the first time that the boys and girls pole vault champions have come from the same high school.

While Erickson was claiming first place, Lincoln-Way East's Joe Noonan was second in 16-6.

Thornwood's Josh Gist finished third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.20. Thornridge's Adum Gross was fourth (14.30), Brother Rice's Tony Morrison fifth (14.46), Hillcrest's Andre Townsend eighth (14.94) and Thornton's William Lindsey ninth (19.99). Bloomington's Tyler Sipes won in 14.01.

Hillcrest's Andre Townsend was third in the 300 hurdles in 37.96, as TF North's Willie Knox was fifth in 38.72. Kraig Appleton of East St. Louis won in 37.57.

Oak Forest's Jacob Solus was fourth in the triple jump in 46-3¾. Bolingbrook's Troy Doris was first in 50-9.

Thornwood brought home a fourth place standing in the 400 meter relay with a time of 42.14. The runners were Daniel Fleming, Dajari Nelson, Phillip Jones and Gist.

"Coming into state, we were just trying to make it to the Saturday finals," Jones said. "We wanted to place and I'm pleased that we were able to do that."

Thornton's foursome of Corey Sykes, Brian White, Michael Beard and Daniel Eaves took fifth in 42.29. Springfield Lanphier won in 41.54.

Thornton's White, Eaves, Beard and Sykes teamed up to finish fifth in the 800 relay in 1:28.15. Thornwood was eighth in 1:29.34 behind the work of Gist, Fleming, Jones and Nelson.

Sandburg took fifth in the 3200 relay with Tom Sideras, Zach Dahleen, Mike Marbach and Kevin Adamowski timing 7:50.20.

Lockport's Kyle Engnell was sixth in the 800 run in 1:56.60. Palatine's Mat Smoody was the winner in 1:52.57.

Thornwood, tied for eighth in the team standings with 19 points, was sixth in the 1600 relay in 3:21.71 with Cory McNeal, Fleming, Kunle Daramola and Gist. Hillcrest was ninth in 3:26.14 with Caleb Cartman, Sam Russell, Uri Kuyoro and Townsend.

Thornton was seventh in 7:52.81, as Willie Robinson, Joshua Washington, Angel Perez and Erik Perez did the work. York won the race in 7:49.37.

Lincoln-Way East's Marvin Cosby ended up seventh in the 400 dash in 49.17. The event was won by Artavious Kizer of East St. Louis Senior in 47.31.

Lincoln-Way East's Adam Gettis finished sixth in the discus in 168-6, as Lake Park's Dan Block was first in 183-4. Gettis was ninth in the shot put in 55-½. Mascoutah's Adam Ruiz won in 59-5.

Gettis' efforts helped Lincoln-Way East tie for 13th place in the team standings with 16 points.

Adam Sanders of Richards was 10th in the discus in 162-6.

Thornton's Eaves placed ninth in the 100 dash in 10.98. Demarcus Brooks of Springfield Southeast won in 10.57.

In the high jump, Thornwood's Djari Nelson was 10th in 6-5, as Rich East's Kalvin Cheeks was 14th in 6-1. Major Clay of Springfield Lanphier won with a leap of 6-9.

Lockport's Dusty Sluzewicz took ninth in the 200 dash in 22.68. Waukegan's Darren Patterson won in 21.87.

Lincoln-Way East's Kyle Kirchner was 10th in the 3200 run in 9:20, as Jacobs' Evan Jager won in 8:52.33. Other area finishers were Lincoln-Way Central's Mark Battista (19, 9:28.98), Bloom's John Tessling (33, 9:34.83), Brother Rice's Rich Eber (34, 9:36.92) and Marist's Roy Witty (45, 9:54.48).

Thornton Fractional South's Jordan Hampton finished 10th in the long jump in 21 feet, 4½ inches. Bolingbrook's Davis won in 23-7¾.

Cahokia won the team championship with 63 points, followed by East St. Louis Senior (61). Thornwood tied for eighth with 19 points.

In Class A, Beecher was fifth in the 3200 relay with Matt Paarleberg, Billy Carey, Devin Horner and Garrett Nykaza timing 8:11.10.
