It's only fitting that Will Schaeffer would break the John Davis Stadium pole vault record at Glenbrook South's John Davis Invite.

Friday's annual invitational gave Schaeffer one last shot at setting the mark, which he did with a 15-foot-1 inch effort. The vault also set a meet record, though Titan senior was somewhat disappointed he failed to clear 15-6, which would have been his new personal record.

"That doesn't happen too often," Schaeffer said. "I had close enough attempts at 15-6 that I'm pretty happy though. Having a bigger pole will help a lot, it just didn't come in yet."

With a bigger pole in the next week, Schaeffer should have plenty of room between himself and 15-6 at Niles West Friday for the Central Suburban League South championship meet.

As hosts of the John Davis Invite, the Titans shared first place with CSL North representative Niles North. Each team scored 79 points, led by first place Glenbrook South finishes for the 800 relay (1:33.9) and 400 relay (43.3) teams featuring Jon Howard, Saidu Sesay, Joe Tracy and Devin Henderson.

"We wanted to come out and win this for the school," Tracy said. "Coming off a big win at the Spartan Invite, this is the only event we host all year so we'd love a big performance here.

"Also, the better teams from our sectional are right here, so this is the first real measuring stick to see how we'll do and it helps us determine who will run at the sectional," Tracy added. "We're very confident and we're finally starting to see our times drop."

Following two straight first place team performances, Glenbrook South has no intention of slowing down once the Titans enter the slightly-favored Niles West Wolves' home track.

"We wanted to do well to keep the momentum going so we have some confidence going into conference," Sesay said. "The excitement is building every day, even in practice. Everyone is trying to get better at what they're doing and we're excited for the postseason."

Whether or not the season-long success parlays itself into a conference title will be seen at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Then, the goal is to get as many Titans downstate as possible for the May 25-26 IHSA state championship meet.

"All the hard work has paid off," Howard says. "We just want to continue to get better and shave off some time so we will be able to go downstate where we have a lot of expectations."
