Marian's Gergel flies high
Senior wins pole vault at state track

CHARLESTON | Given the option, most of her peers would have picked the 800-meter run.

But Marian Catholic senior Melissa Gergel never wavered when it came to choosing between that race and the pole vault.

"I did one meet with that and I was done," Gergel joked, referring to the 800.

"That was so hard, harder than the pole vault, I think. I knew (the vault) was something I wanted to do, but I wasn't expecting anything miraculous."

Gergel got it anyway at Saturday's girls state track meet. Clearing 12 feet, 6 inches, she became the first local female athlete to garner a championship in the vault.

In winning her title, Gergel bested Lincoln-Way Central's Jenna Wexter, the girl who had defeated her at the Illinois Prep Top Times. The Top Times, held at the beginning of April, is considered an indoor version of the state meet.
